Chinese chipmaker Rockchip to launch CPU for Android
ARM could be getting a bit of competition in the ultra-low voltage CPU market with Chinese chip maker Rockchip getting in on the act.
According to an article over on PMP Today, the company has designed a range of new processors for the next generation of Chinese smartphones – with the most notable being the RK2808, a processor expressly designed for devices running Google's Android mobile platform.
The company, which has previously specialised in mobile internet devices, hopes that its new processor will bring improved multimedia capabilities to Android-based devices to address what it calls “poor multimedia functions, which [are] recognised by the industry.”
The company is looking to launch the first Android-based handset with the RK2808 chip on-board some time after October – with an Android-based PMP device acting as the testing ground before Rockchip wets its feet in the new mobile 'phone market. With support for mobile TV functionality and the ability to play back up to 720p content, it could prove a winner.

Acer Android Netbook to come in August
Acer is expected to launch its previously announced dual-OS netbook, with both Windows XP and Android, in August 2009, while Quanta Computer and Compal Electronics both set to benefit from the orders, according to a Chinese-language Apple Daily report.
Since Acer still needs to pay licensing fees for Windows XP on the netbook, the product is unlikely to be priced lower than XP-only models.
In additional news, Asustek Computer and Micro-Star International (MSI) are still developing Android-based netbooks, but have no plans launch related netbooks in 2009, added the paper.

Android to come in 'Smart' Household Appliances
Search giant Google said its Android operating system -- initially developed to power higher-end smartphones -- could eventually support non-computer devices such as household appliances.
At a joint T-Mobile and Google media event, Andy Rubin, Google's vice president of engineering, said he had met with hardware companies that showed him different non-computer devices running Android -- ranging from robots, GPS terminals and even refrigerators running the software.
He added that Android was designed for devices other than mobile phones in mind.
"We are agnostic to the physical infrastructure that we are running on," said Rubin. "Fundamentally, we are trying to connect them all."
Despite the advanced software features, many hardware makers have been slow to release Android devices. But Rubin said momentum will increase this year with around 15 to 20 Android phones being launched.
"Social is a big push for now," said Rubin.
The Mountain View, Calif.-based company said that future versions of it's Android software will support more social-networking features. For example, an incoming call will show a caller's photo, name and the last update he or she posted to Facebook.
Rubin also added that it plans to expand the ways developers can charge for application through the Android Market, its online store.
Currently, the store only supports Google Checkout -- Google's online payment service -- but eventually it will also support multiple billing systems.
T-Mobile, the only major U.S. carrier to launch an Android smartphone, said it will also soon allow customers charge application purchases directly to their T-Mobile bill.
