How to root Motorola Droid 4

Verizon Droid 4 has been out in the market for just over a day and we already have the root instructions available thanks to Dan Rosenberg. Gaining root access on your brand new Motorola Droid 4 is just a few steps away.

I should remind you that do not attempt anything with your phone that you are not sure off. Now back to rooting your Droid 4.

All you have to do:

  • Download the required files from here
  • Extract them to a folder
  • Install latest Motorola drivers (Download)
  • Enable USB debugging mode in phone setting
  • Connect your Droid 4 to PC
  • Execute “RUN.BAT” from the extracted files
  • You are good to go.

Do let us know about your root attempt in comments.

This procedure bricked my Droid 4. Installed latest Motorola drivers, then plugged in, enabled USB debugging, and ran batch as indicated. Ended up w/ the old INFINITE BOOT LOOP! Yee haw! Not sure of the cause, but I did have internal storage encrypted and a PIN number activated, so maybe that had something to do with it…???

    Steps for me:

    1. Installed windows drivers “Download Motorola 5.4.0 Driver with MotoHelper” from here “USB and PC Charging Drivers – Motorola Mobility, Inc. USA”

    2. from phone… Click Settings -> Applications -> development -> usb debugging (and enable it)

    3. Plug phone into pc and wait for it to load your mapped drive on your pc

    4. Run the bat file.

It reboots the phone a couple of times… Dont unplug it until it is done. After final boot and the bat file saying it is complete, you should be rooted.

So happy I did this and it worked. Didn’t need a $200 brick :-D

oh and it does not matter where you extract the zip file to. Just make sure all the files are extracted into the same folder. The batch file you run auto finds your phone. I have 10 mapped drives and it found the phone with no issues
