Reliance Jio logoThe seemingly endless wait for Reliance Jio’s 4G services is almost over. Reliance Industries Limited chairman Mukesh Ambani announced at the company’s 41st AGM that Jio will commence its operations in December this year.

According to Ambani, the company is ready to serve all 29 states and will reach 80 percent of the Indian population at launch with a target to cover 100 percent in the next three years.

The company will begin the beta-testing in the next few months and is also planning to release several mobile applications. The company’s Jio Chat application is already being used by over a million users.

Reliance Jio will also introduce 4G LTE smartphones priced under INR 4,000 with the commercial launch of its 4G service. The company is working with the likes of Huawei, ZTE, Samsung and others for these smartphones. Just yesterday, ZTE had launched a 4G LTE Android phone in the country at INR 4,999. So, under INR 4K 4G smartphones are certainly feasible.

Opera MaxOver a year after introducing its data-management and saving application “Opera Max” for Android users, Opera is ready to bring it to the Indian market. The company revealed in a blog post today that Opera Max is coming soon to the country.

Opera hasn’t shared an exact release date at this point, but expect to see the official launch sometime this month.

So, what exactly does Opera Max do?Opera Max

Opera Max basically passes all the unencrypted data coming to your phone regardless of the application or browser through its servers and compresses it. By compressing stuff like videos, photos and other media, the Opera app reduces your overall data consumption, in turn helping you get more out of your normal data plan. Also, it not only works with mobile networks, but also with Wi-Fi connections, so you get savings all around.

In addition to data compression, the Opera Max also keep track of your data usage and identifies the applications, which are using most data or using data in background, so you can prevent some (or all) of them from using your data without your permission.

As your data from applications like Facebook, Gmail, banking apps etc. is encrypted, you don’t have to worry about your privacy or security.

Google Web Light improvements

Google’s optimised version of AndroidOS.in

A month after beginning the field trials for its new feature to optimise webpages for the Google search users on Android devices in Indonesia, Google has announced its expansion to the Indian market.

According to a post on Google India blog, in two weeks, Google will start showing an optimised version of mobile webpages to search users on Android devices in India.

“If you’re in India, with an Android phone and on a slow connection, like 2G, you should start to see pages loading a whole lot faster, while using far less data, via your Chrome or Android browser from Google’s search results,” wrote Hiroto Tokusei of Google.

The search giant notes that during its Indonesia trials, the optimised webpages loaded four times faster and use 80 percent less data than before.

Although Google has not officially named the feature, the support documents indicate that it is internally dubbed as Google Web Light.Google Web Light improvements

Who will see these optimised webpages?

Google search users on Android devices, who are on slower data connection and use Chrome for Android or Android (AOSP) browser.

What exactly is Google optimising?

Google is essentially passing the whole webpage through its own servers and transcoding it to reduce the overall size, caching a few elements and removing the excess advertisements. According to Google, it will only serve 3 ads per page.

Will I lose any data on the optimised webpages?

The optimized pages preserve a majority of the relevant content and provide a link for users to view the original page.

Will also webpages be optimised?

No. The websites, who have opted out of the Google Web Light, sites that require cookies, sites that use a significant amount of data and the websites that are technically difficult to transcode will not be optimised.

Is it available anywhere outside India and Indonesia?

It is coming soon to Brazil. Keep an eye on the Google Brazil blog for more.

Micromax Canvas Fire 3The Wall Street Journal recently carried a report – India’s Micromax Churns Out Phones Like Fast Fashion, and in this report Micromax CEO Vineet Taneja was quoted saying that they had better turnaround time than any other company. Looks like, in the quick turnaround, the company sometimes jumps a few product names and by the time they realise it, the new phone is already in the market. The same seems to be happening with the Canvas Fire 3.

Eight months after the launch of Micromax Canvas Fire A104 aka Fire 2, the smartphone vendor had launched the Canvas Fire 4 in the country. At that time, nobody knew what had happened with Fire 3, but now it looks like that the company executives had simply forgotten the Fire 3 and they have decided to rectify the mistake.

The new Canvas Fire 3 was recently listed on the company’s website, and is now available from almost all major e-retailers and physical stores for as low as INR 5,919.

The specifications of the smartphone are pretty ordinary, which is expected given the affordable price-tag. It packs a 4.5-inch qHD IPS display with Gorilla Glass 3, Android 4.4.2 KitKat, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, and 1850 mAh battery.

It also comes with 5MP rear camera autofocus rear camera with LED flash, 2MP front shooter with LED flash, 1GB of RAM, and dual front-firing speakers. You will also get dual-SIM support, 3G, 8GB of on-board storage and microSD slot on Canvas Fire 3.

According to Micromax, the Canvas Fire 3 is being offered in Black colour.Micromax Canvas Fire 3
