Confirm – Wi-Fi calling coming to T-Mobile Android phones; myTouch & Defy to get it first

After a slew of rumors and leak, we finally have a confirmation from T-Mobile on Wi-Fi calling. Yes, it is indeed coming to a range of Android smartphones.

T-Mobile will be introducing Wi-Fi calling to a number of Android phones including the recently released version of myTouch, and Motorola Defy.

“T-Mobile’s expansion of Wi-Fi Calling to Android smartphones is an excellent innovation, and part of our ongoing initiatives on behalf of our customers to enhance indoor coverage,” said Torrie Dorrell, vice president, connected family products and services, T-Mobile USA. “This new execution of Wi-Fi Calling technology helps us ensure that our customers’ Android-powered smartphones can keep them connected to the important people in their lives where they work, live or play.”

The solution for Android is powered by Kineto’s Smart Wi-Fi application and it will allow Android T-Mobile owners to use WiFi for voice calls and text messages.

Wi-Fi Calling for Android is anticipated to be available on a growing selection of T-Mobile’s Android-powered smartphones in the coming months. The new T-Mobile myTouch is expected to be available in time for the holidays, making it the first Android smartphone to feature it.W
