Wait and expectations with the Micromax’s first Android phone were pretty high when it was launched recently and has it performed to those expectations, we will find out in our review. In this review we will look at every aspect which makes Micromax Andro – A Hit or a Flop.

We first heard about Micromax’s Android dream back in October, and then the rumor about Diwali launch. But finally we have Micromax Andro A60 and it is retailing for a dirt cheap price of Rs 6,999, which also makes it the most affordable Android phone in India.

Hardware:

As a budget Android smartphone, and being touted as the first Android for many [at least in the TV commercial], Micromax Andro is a pretty decent looking phone. It’s smaller than many Android devices and lighter too, so it fits and feels nice on your hand. And, interestingly, all my friends and colleagues, who have seen Andro – have liked the looks. Although, its back cover feels plasticky, you cannot ask for more in this price and yes – that Android figure on the back cover just adds more to the feel of it being an Android phone.

Coming to buttons, there is a D-Pad, three touch sensitive buttons, and two more buttons, which do a lot of stuff including one, which acts as the camera button as there is no dedicated button for that. On the left side of the phone is the volume-rocker, on the top 3.5 mm headset jack and on the bottom the micro-USB port.  And finally we have a 3.2 MP camera, about which we will talk later.

Display

Let’s talk about one thing that disappoints me the most – the resistive display. Andro comes with 2.8 inch display with 240X320 resolution. The use of resistive display across the manufacturers have gone down, and apart from some smartphones including HTC Tattoo, LG Optimus, which came almost a year back, there are very less resistive screen Android phones right now in the market. Even Huawei Ideos, which will be priced similarly, has a capacitive display.

The problems with resistive display start as soon as you buy your phone and switch it on for the first time – touch screen calibration. It takes multiple attempts and you start getting irritated and if you have not calibrated it rightly, you will have problems using touch all the time – like you will try to press ‘Z’ on the virtual keyboard and ‘A’ will appear.

Using the default Android keyboard on Andro is a big pain, but the presence of Swype is a big respite. Although you might not be able to make use of Swype’s true capabilities, but it provides a clean keyboard, which is useful in normal typing in portrait mode.

In other usages, touch screen can be problematic at times, but once you get used to it and have low expectations, things can be adjusted. And we Indians are so used to adjustments.

Leaving Display saga behind, let’s talk about the processor. Micromax Andro comes with a 600 Mhz processor, which provides a good experience and is a true value for money. Even the pre-loaded racing game Speed Forge 3D works smoothly.

In overall daily use, Micromax Andro will not disappoint, you unless you start expecting a N1 out of it. Call quality is good, voice comes loud and clear. There are ample number of connectivity options – including Bluetooth, HSPDA, Wi-Fi and GPS.

We could not confirm the exact size of internal memory, as according to Micromax, Andro A60 has 150 MB of internal memory, but we could easily see 182 MB free in our test unit, while some apps reported even over 200 MB of free memory. Well, that’s good for users; you will have a lot more space to install apps.

Software:

Android 2.1: Thank goodness, it comes with Android 2.1. While it might not get the FroYo sweetness, but unlike other budget phones, Andro does not leave you with obsolete Android 1.5/1.6. The presence of Android 2.1 gives you improved Web browser, as well as native support for Microsoft Exchange. There are also the user-interface tweaks that were introduced with version 2.1 and you get the stock Android UI.

Pre-Installed Apps: Micromax has pre-loaded a few apps considering the memory limitations. There is Root Explorer, Speed Forge 3D, RSS Reader and the usual Google Apps suite. There is one thing interesting here that Root Explorer is actually a paid app, which provides access of system files on a rooted phone, so why has Micromax put in that. When we asked them, it is the normal file explorer for them, and you cannot play/edit with system files, but we were able to copy system files and even take out app installer files from system/app folder.  So, if you are one of those geeky types Android users, you can do a lot with Andro.

Camera:

Micromax Andro comes with a 3.2 MP camera, which performs decently in outdoor shooting, but indoor shots can be seriously underexposed. So, do not expect Andro to replace you compact camera :P. There is no dedicated camera button either.

Video recording quality is so-so, although the sharing via YouTube, Bluetooth, Messages and Gmail options are straightforward ways of distributing the content online and to your friends.

Battery Life:

Micromax Andro scores on the battery life. We did not expect much from the 1280 MaH battery, and it seriously outperformed. If you are not much of a heavy user, it can go for two days easily, and even to the third day. For heavy users, it will not disappoint you either, but you might need to charge it daily to avoid any intra-day battery blues.

Wrap-Up:

Finally, the wrap up. Despite its resistive screen, and other flaws, we still are quite impressed with the phone and in this budget seriously one cannot expect more and if you have more money to spare, there are other Android smartphones as well in the market to charm you.

But as the company is targeting the first time Android users, we know they won’t complain with what they are getting with Micromax Andro.  Andro is more than value for money and is the right buy for those who do not want to spend a fortune for just trying Android.

That is all for now, if you want to know anything else, drop your questions in comments, I will be happy to answer. If you want to check out more hands on pictures and unboxing, check out our earlier post here.

Update: Oh..we missed accessories. Micromax Andro comes with a 2GB card, charger and headset in the box. Headset works fine but we would have been happy if it was a little more louder. Even on the full volume, it is sometimes hard to hear at noisy places.

Update 2: As some commentators wanted to know about Wi-Fi, and accelerometer sensor. Yes, Wi-Fi is a problem, after being connected for a long time, it stops working and you have to reconnect to get it working. Accelerometer sensor works fine, we had no problems with that.

Quick Look:

Good Bad So-So
  • Small and light
  • Runs Android 2.1
  • Great connectivity options
  • Low price
  • Resistive screen
  • Plasticky design
  • Camera

    1. @santosa.. no there is no FM and yes.. we forgot to talk about headsets.. they are fine… but audio output is a bit on the lower side..

  1. if one is willing to spend extra 2k.. Samsung Galaxy5 is gud option ..

ANDRO’s Resistive screen is only downside i can see..

  2. Thanks Gourav
but I think u missed some of the key things like
    GPS
    3G
    Wifi
    Gravity sensor

and is it possible to type in landscape mode.

    1. @f1freak.. I have added some updates, you can check in that in that .. and yes you can type in landscape more and that is the only place where you can really type.. in portrait, it is a total pain..

      Will post about GPS later..

  3. @suraj, 2k extra just to get capacitive touchscreen? aaaaaah, not a good deal when Micromax is offers better battery life. if Andro cost 6.5k & G5 cost 1k more, G5 good buy else, not.

@gaurav, nice review. will suggest Andro to my friends & your review as a proof that Andro maybe cheap but indeed carries terrific value.

  4. i heard it provides extendeable meomry upto 32gb.. s dat true???, if so where cn i get such a huge built memory card.. n if i use it, hw abt mobile performance?? will it go slow??

    1. @shashi.. almost every Android phone gives this.. you can buy 32GB/16GB/8GB or any other size memory card, and use it..
There will be no performance loss as it is officially support, but I would say go for 8 GB or 16 GB ones…

  5. hey really nice review
but i expected a little more fotos of its UI
pls upload it if u can………

    1. @ram.. UI is the stock Android UI, which you can find anywhere. Just search on Google and you will find hundreds on Android stock UI pics..

    1. @Santosa, I dont think it will get Android 2.2, but it depends on Micromax and about the size of internal memory. 150 MB is enough, if you want to have a decent number of apps, but if you want flood your phone with apps, that is certainly not enough.

    1. @saket nothng official on Ideos, and as I have not seen Ideos till now; can not comment on it.

    1. @santosa… because of the small screen, don’t expect much and as there is no multi-touch. It is so-so.

  6. thanks 4 the reply,gaurav
    so wat about java
    does it support java apps??
i kno dere r lot of android apps but just want to kno
i seriously considerin buyin this, so any help would be welcome

  7. processor speed??
is it similar to ZTE penguin!!?
any problem with screen like finger impression because most of cheap phone has t problem

  8. what about the applications ? does it support all android applications?where will we get its applications?

  9. Only resistive screen is the drawback for this phone.

I am waiting for IDEOS, which will have Froyo and a capacitive screen and probably be priced same as ANDRO. I will wait till Jan 2011, if IDEOS not released by then, I will go for Micromax Andro.

  10. Hi Gaurav,

    Awesome review dude!! Thanks!

    1) Then Android OS does not support VIDEO CALLS as it is Disabled in Kernal.
Has Micromax enabled that feature in Andro. Can we make VIDEO CALLS using Andro A60 on 3G Network.

    2) Can any other Android phone in the market (Of same price) be upgraded with new versions of Android OS(2.2 or later)?

    3) Could you please compare it with other phones in market in the same price range?

  11. I feel ashamed seeing all the comments ? Are we Indians this stupid? ( Excellent review though ) … This is the first resistive touch android phone.. What were they ( Micromax) thinking when they were designing this crap ? That too resistive on such a small display? It will be impossible to type anything.

1 advice , if you respect yourself as an individual , leave this mobile and by some other mobile ( even china mobiles are kinda better than this shit )

3 phones thats almost in the same price range-

    Samsung Galaxy5
    Samsung galaxy Spica i5700
    HTC Tattoo ..

    Never buy this shit..

  12. any idea when Huawei u8150 (Ideos) will be launched here in India?
Both suffice my budget and taste – but i guess Ideos is a better contender from a lot better manufacturer!

  13. They are not saying RAM and ROM which most of the Android phones are publishing. Any idea about that

  14. @Mr. X
You should have a look at your own stupidity meter my friend.
This is not the first android phone with a resistive touch screen. HTC Tattoo has a resistive screen and much more expensive. Only the phone near its price and has a capacitive screen is samsung galaxy 5

  15. after how much time wifi gets disconnected?? and for keypad nokia plectrum stylus will work or not?

  16. to all those bothered about memory…….
even if its 200MB internal……i dont think its enuff…
let us take some exmples of apps which are very popular on android and probably u’ll keep them on the phone

    1.angry birds (14mb+10mb)
    2.angry birds seasons(12mb+20mb)
    3.evernote (3mb)
4.tweetdeck (1mb+it caches almost 20mb data upon every week use)
    5.facebook ( 4.5mb)
    6.slice it (10mb)
    7.pocket god(35mb)
    8.google earth(23mb)
    9.yahoo mal+msngr (8mb apx)
    10.winamp(4mb)

that wont leave u with much space i guess
(all sized of installed apps and not of apk)

  17. how is the sound(ringer) quality if i like to play songs.
    how is the screen quality?
can we install .jar or .sis files in it?
simply tell everyone that is it better then a s60 phone!!
    THANXS

  18. Can I read books ??
Does this support word, excel, ppt, pdf documents !!!!
    Please tell us Gaurav !!!!

    1. @Gaurab Yes, you can download any office suite from Android Market for Docs/Excel and other office files.. There is nothing Andro specific in that..

  19. @mandeep…do u even know what ANDROID is ?…..sis is symbian native file…..u cant install in on android….android has apk files….and as for java…they dont work on androids

  20. which one i should buy?? this one or nokia 5230?? just a screen resolution is a matter!! 5230 has better screen!! any suggestion?

  21. Sayantan & Gourav , first thanks for reply !!!! can you please suggest me a phone between nokia 5230 , lg cookie plus , nokia 5235 and this A60 !!!
can I trust micromax as we trust nokia or lg !!!
    please do reply !!!!

  22. @Sayantan Nandi . . i don know android thats why i m asking here, and if u know better then tell me about its browsing skills what is special in an android phone ?

  23. This is a lovely phone for first time android users. If you are thinking of exchanging your old hone and have any Nokia phone with USB/cam you would get a buyback offer of atleast 1300 to 1500 with this Micormax A60. So you will be paying only about 5500 Rs. Max for the Micromax. If you are able to get hold of the new A70 which is supposed to be priced within 8K you can grab that too.

Ofcourse the memory is very limited but you can manage your applications with the SD card. Just need to keep your installable applications in the SD or there are also other ways of using SD card memory if you are a Linux / Android FAX.

A must buy if you are the one who doesnt look for expensive phones.

The Best Phone in the market for the price if you are looking for features, specially,

Works fantastic in terms of speed comared to any other phones – Nokia, Motorolla, Samsung etc,

Can be used as GPS Navigator

Can use Google Maps, and Locator

The best Playstation, Video Game player if you are fan of games. NFS Shift works pretty well too inspite of the graphics limitations.

Well I would recommend this phone to anyone who uses ANY phone below 10K. Also would recommend to wait for the A70 price within 8K.

  24. Micromax A60 is the cheapest android phone in market come with attractive price and unique design.
Phone commits 2.1 Éclair android, WIFI, GPRS, good battery life and yes 3.2 megapixel camera.
Micromax A60’s interface is fine and GPRS works good but 3.2 megapixel camera which commit 62K TFT, (320*240 pixels) 7.1cms Touch Screen is unable to fulfill its commitment, even the basic version of micromax phone given better camera quality than Micromax A60 model.
If we talk about Micromax q75 it comes with 6.1cm TFT QVGA (240*320) and same 3.2 megapixel camera but picture quality of q75 is far better than Micromax A60.
If you want to click picture with Micromax A60 then you need enormous light like you are taking picture in photo studio otherwise color goes vanish. Micromax q3’s 1.3 megapixal camera even better than 3.2 migapixal of Micromax A60.
Camera quality of A60 is simply pathetic…
Micromax A60 is available in market at Rs.5600 and the price of Micromax q75 is Rs.3600.
from Micromax A60 you can only surf internet from your phone, apart from gprs nothing you will get worst camera ever and low grade music quality!!
IF ANY ONE WANT THEN HE/SHE SEND MAIL TO ZYANAZ@INDIA.COM I WILL SEND SNAPSHORT OF PICTURE WHICH I HAVE TAKEN FROM MICROMAX A60 AND Q75…..

  25. Whether to buy micromax a60 is worth for first time try to touch screen. Whether other companies mobile also available with all the same features like a60 like dual sim, android os, 3.2 camera, touch screen, 3g enable etc. please suggest also what is SAR for the same whether it will be harmful for brain?.

    Your opinion please
