Download the Ice Cream Sandwich ‘Roboto’ font for your Desktop

Last October, when Ice Cream Sandwich was announced, one of the first things highlighted in the huge press conference from Hong Kong was a sleek, new font used across the entire face of the Android OS, called Roboto. One of the most interesting and appealing things about the font was its unique ability to play friendly with smaller smartphone screens, as well as larger screens found on tablets. I personally love the font — it is simple, yet elegant, and looks very nice on my Asus Transformer.

For those of you who have patiently waited for the font to become available in an even larger fashion, your wait is now over. Google has apparently made the font available for use on any computer capable of using TrueType fonts. Even better, you don’t have to pay a dime to get the font, as Google was kind enough to make it available free of charge.

If you’re running Windows 7, the install process is simple. Just grab the zip file from the download link at the bottom of the post. Extract it and click on the .ttf file to install — that’s it. Now you’ve got the lovely Roboto font at your disposal and you can do with it as you please.

That’s a great looking font. I haven’t installed a font on my computer in years, but I think I will have to put this one on.

Google is not releasing the Roboto font for desktop use. This font is not optimized for desktop screens. Nearly ALL desktop screens have a lower ppi than is required to render Roboto as cleanly as a smartphone screen. Check the PPI of your PC here: http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html. I have a Galaxy Nexus that has 2.5 times the PPI of my 1920×1080 laptop screen.
