Is Polaroid working on interchangeable-lens mirrorless Android camera?

Polaroid was the first company to show an Android powered Smart Camera at this year’s CES, but we never saw that camera in the market. It seems now the company is working on something even better – an interchangeable-lens mirrorless Android powered camera.

Dubbed as IM1836, this Polaroid branded Smart camera is reportedly being manufactured by Sakar International.  polaroid-mirrorless-IM1836

The images of this camera recently appeared in industry magazine Dealerscope and were also spotted on a Russian social network by PhotoRumours.  According to the information published in Dealerscope, the IM1836 will be powered by Android 4.0 and come with 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD, 18.1MP resolution sensor, pop-up flash, Wi-Fi connectivity, a microSD card slot, headphone and HDMI outputs, and HD video recording.

The camera looks very similar to Nikon’s 1 J2 mirrorless camera, so PetaPixel speculates that Sakar International and Polaroid might have somehow convinced Nikon to repackage a J2 with Polaroid branding on the outside (and minor cosmetic changes) and Android OS on the inside, but it seems highly unlikely.

We will have to wait until CES to hear something official on the matter on Polaroid.
