Samsung India has started rolling out the official Ice Cream Sandwich update for Galaxy R in the country. The update is available both via Kies app and over-the-air.
About 239MB in download, the update brings the usual ICS goodness to this Tegra 2 powered smartphone.
There is no official change-log available, but you should get performance improvements, Face Unlock, UI changes, support for new app, enhanced notifications, enhanced widgets and more.
You can manually check for the update by going to Settings -> About Phone -> Software Update -> Update.
While this is certainly good news for Galaxy R users, one has to look back and see the amount of time Samsung took to brings ICS to this smartphone. Samsung Galaxy R was originally launched in India in October 2011 with Gingerbread on-board, ICS was also officially announced the same month by Google, and the Korean manufacturer took over 14 months to release the Android 4.0 update. Really Samsung, is that how long it takes to release a software update?
We have seen in the past too that Samsung has a pretty bad record of releasing software updates. If you don’t have a flagship Samsung smartphone like Galaxy S II or Galaxy S III or Note series, chances are that either your smartphone will never receive an major update or it will take months after the official Google release to reach your phone.

Poor phone….ignored by Sammy…
Upgraded my Galaxy R with ISC few days back.
Nice to have additional features.
One big improvement i experienced is browsing Speed / Data download speed.
Bad thing is battery drains faster than BG.
I am also facing the same battery issue after updating to ICS. Utterly poor battery performance. Had to keep the phone charged atleast 2 times a day
Battery is bad in indian ics!just flash austrian or german ics and ur good to go!
Facing same battery issue after updating GB to ICS 4 in Galaxy R.
How to solve this problem?
I updated my galaxy R to ICS recently but I’m facing a minor problem while playing games that while playing it stucks for a few micro seconds & then resumes again causing alot of trouble.
Moreover the battery drains out faster than GB.
