Considering that Samsung is beginning sales of original Galaxy Gear smartwatch next week, one would expect the next-generation Galaxy Gear to arrive around the same time next year but that does not seem the case. According to a report in Korean publication
Samsung is apparently rushing the development of Gear 2 after the existing Galaxy Gear failed to generate any buzz and has largely been criticised because of a hefty price-tag and limited feature-set. Also, the current-generation Galaxy Gear only works with Note 3 and Note 10.1 (2014) devices and Samsung will issue an update for devices like S4 to make them compatible with Gear on a later date.
Daum notes that next-generation Galaxy Gear will come with support for a larger set of devices and more features will be added to the device.
We are a little sceptical about the claims made in this Daum report as Samsung would at least wait for the actual sales to begin before jumping to rush the development of the next-generation smartwatch. It is not far-fetched to think that Samsung would already be working on Gear 2 but an early-2014 release seems too much.
