Nokia’s first Android phones are official – Nokia X, X+ and XL

Nokia XAfter a host of leaks and rumours, Nokia’s first Android smartphones are finally official. Announced today at a Mobile World Congress press event in Barcelona, the new Nokia X, X+ and XL phones come with a forked version of Android coupled with Nokia and Microsoft apps as well as services.

The company stated that the Nokia X smartphones are targeted to the growth markets as it attempts to bring affordable smartphones to the next billion consumers. According to Nokia, the X phones will always be budget devices, so don’t expect any flagships from Nokia with Android on-board.

“Nokia has connected billions of people around the world, and today we demonstrated how our portfolio is designed to connect the next billion people to great experiences. Our deliberate approach is to offer four tiers of products including our affordable entry-level devices like the new Nokia 220; our entry-level Asha touch phones like the new Nokia Asha 230; our new Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL smartphones primarily for growth economies; and our Lumia portfolio, which is where we introduce the greatest innovation and provide full compatibility with the Microsoft experience,” said Stephen Elop, executive vice president of Nokia’s Devices & Services.

Talking about smartphones, Nokia X and X+ come with a 4-inch IPS display, 3MP rear camera, 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 3G support. X+ has 768MB of RAM, while Nokia X only comes with 512MB.  Other features are almost the same.

Coming to Nokia XL, it is a 5-inch smartphone, also with WVGA resolution, dual-core Qualcomm processor and 3G. It however packs a 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, and 768MB of RAM.

Software

As we have already stated, Nokia X phones come with a forked version of Android, most probably 4.1.2, not KitKat as was rumoured. In addition, Nokia is bundling Nokia and Microsoft services and apps like HERE Maps with turn-by-turn navigation and Nokia MixRadio music streaming on the phones.

A range of third-party apps also come pre-installed, including BBM, Plants vs. Zombies 2, Viber, Vine and Twitter. More can be download from the Nokia Store, third-party app stores and even side-loaded.

Pricing and availability

According to Nokia, Nokia X will be available immediately in Asia Pacific, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle-East and Africa for a price-tag of 89 euros. On other hand, Nokia X+ and XL will go on sale in early-Q2, 2014 for 99 euros and 109 euros respectively.

Goodies:

Microsoft is offering Nokia X smartphone buyers 1 month of free Skype calling including landline/ mobile phone calls and 10GB of free OneDrive storage.
