Indian e-retail giant Flipkart is reportedly working on a range of tablets, which will be released in the country soon. The retailer will be launching these tablets under its DigiFlip brand.
Flipkart has quietly been expanding the range of products available under DigitFlip, which was originally launched as an accessory label in 2012. As per Flipkart website, there are over 300 products currently on offer as a part of the brand. Thus, the addition to tablets to the label doesn’t seem all that surprising.
According to a report in The Economic Times, the first Flipkart tablet will be released soon and is likely to be sourced from overseas vendors like most of Indian tablet vendors do.
Flipkart’s alleged decision to enter Indian tablet market comes at a very interesting time when tablet sales are declining and only 0.78 million tablets were shipped in the country in the first quarter of this year. These numbers do show that the tablet market is largely untapped in the country and with the right set of features and pricing, one could do well, however Flipkart will need to get everything right including a proper service network, which it will need to build from the scratch.
This isn’t the first time we are hearing that Flipkart is looking to enter the mobile device category, there were rumours of a Flipkart-branded smartphone but they turned out to be false.
We are actively tracking the latest report and will let you know if anything new pops up.
