Nexus program isn’t dead, expect Nexus device later this year

Google Nexus 5Amid the rumours of the still unofficial Android Silver program, there was speculation that Google will stop making Nexus devices and will stick to the Silver program. Turns out, the reports of the death of Nexus program were unfounded and Google has no intention of doing so, Google’s head of Android engineering and the Nexus program Dave Burke told Read Write.

“People have been commenting about Nexus because there is something else and they think that means the end of Nexus. That is the totally wrong conclusion to make,” Burke said.

As you can see, this statement from Dave makes it pretty clear that we should be seeing the next Nexus smartphone and tablet later this year. We expect the Nexus 6 (or whatever it is called) to arrive alongside the final launch of Android L and Nexus tablet should be coming before that.

Burke explained that Nexus program is essential to the development of Android as it is better to have reference hardware at hand when building a new version of the OS.

“When we are working, there are sort of two outputs. We’re building a Nexus device and we’re building the open source code. There is no way you can build the open source code without the phone or tablet or whatever you are building. You have to live and breathe the code you are developing,” he noted.

So I guess it’s going to be like this,
Android Silver – Super premium phones
    Nexus – premium,
    Android one – budget phones!
