Nokia-owned mapping company HERE has announced the launch of the Android version of its mapping app for Samsung Galaxy smartphones. These maps will remain exclusive to Samsung’s Galaxy Android smartphones for the time being. The company has also unveiled the HERE for Gear maps app for Samsung’s Tizen-running Gear wearables.
According to HERE, its maps will be free to use and work even without an internet connection.
“Your location will be still found via GPS, and browsing the map, searching for places and offline navigation will also keep working, even if you’re not connected,” HERE team noted in a blog post.
Unlike Google Maps, HERE doesn’t provide caching for small areas or regions but you can download full maps for countries or cities to get uninterrupted access.
HERE maps for Android will provide driving, walking and even public transport directions. In addition, you can check out local businesses, live-traffic, real-time transit schedules and more.
HERE maps are available for 200 countries with turn-by-urn directions in almost 100 of these, so you won’t be falling short of maps anytime soon.
Coming to HERE for Gear, the smartwatch app will offer turn-by-turn walk directions, public transit information, location details in map, and download support for offline use.
Both HERE for Galaxy smartphones and Gear will be released along with the worldwide debut of Gear S, which is scheduled for Q4, 2014, in Galaxy Apps.
