Digiflip Pro XT 712: Flipkart’s first self-branded tablet

E-retailer Flipkart is gearing up to expand its self-branded tablet portfolio in the country. It is hosting a press event on August 27 in New Delhi, where it is expected to announce new additions to its Digiflip Pro tablet line-up.

The retailer has partnered with chip maker Intel for these devices and it is likely to unveil as many as three tablets in the country. According to two people familiar with Flipkart’s plans, the upcoming tablets will be priced between INR 5,999 and INR 15,999. The new tablets will sport the Digiflip Pro branding and include Intel’s Atom processors, the people said.

The partnership with Flipkart is a big win for Intel as the chip maker starts to focus more on Android tablets after getting a lukewarm response from majority of the smartphone vendors.

The upcoming tablets will sport 7-inch, 8-inch and 8.9-inch display sizes and run on Android 4.2, however Flipkart will be providing Android 4.4. KitKat update, noted the persons familiar with the matter.

The detailed specifications are unclear at this moment but the tablets will most likely include mid-range and entry-level specifications given the affordable pricing. With the release of these three tablets, the retailer will have a total of four Android tablets in its portfolio.

Earlier, Flipkart has introduced the original Digiflip Pro XT712 tablet in June this year at a price-tag of INR 9,999. The retailer is yet to reveal the sales number or the response for its first major hardware product but the upcoming tablets do indicate the consumer response has been favourable, leading it to expand the number of available offerings.

With Indian tablet market still in nascent stage, there is a big opportunity for Flipkart in the space and the retailer seems to be quite serious about that. According to market research firm IDC, only 780,000 tablets were shipping during the first quarter of this year, of which 47 percent sported the Samsung label.  Although the shipments declined year-on-year, we believe the availability of affordable and capable tablets can provide the require boost to the segment.
