Ubuntu Edge misses its crowdfunding goal by over $19 million

Canonical’s massive crowdfunding campaign for Ubuntu Edge smartphone came to an end minutes ago. As anticipated by many, it did not reach its goal of raising $32 million and fell short by over $19 million.Ubuntu Edge

“So ends a crazy month. We’ve broken records, we’ve been written and talked about across the world, we’ve worn out our F5 keys, and we’ve learned a lot of invaluable lessons about crowdfunding. Our bold campaign to build a visionary new device ultimately fell short, but we can take away so many positives,” Mark Shuttleworth of Canonical wrote in an update on the Indiegogo campaign page. Canonical has announced the first Ubuntu smartphone. Dubbed as Ubuntu Edge, the phone is a very interesting piece of device. Almost everything about the phone is something that you don’t normally see.Ubuntu Edge

First, Canonical wants to raise $32 million (21.5 million pounds) on Indiegogo to build this smartphone. Yes, you read it right. The company is asking prospective consumers to put in money for it to make an Ubuntu phone and it is hoping to do it in 31 days.  At the time of writing this post, it had already raised over $160,000.
