Vodafone to sell Nexus One in UK from April 30

Vodafone to sell Nexus One in UK from April 30 Vodafone will be Europe’s first carrier to sell Google’s Nexus One phone, starting in Britain on April 30. Vodafone said on Monday it would give away Google’s first own-branded phone for free to customers who take out a two-year, 35 pounds ($54)-per-month contract. Price plans will start at 25 pounds per month.
Google is also selling the Nexus One, made by Taiwan’s HTC, directly to consumers, shaking up an environment where carriers normally control customer relationships.

The Nexus One offers popular and new Google services including satellite navigation and voice-activated search, as well as access to more than 40,000 software applications that users can download to customise their phones.
The Nexus One is one of many phones built by third parties on Google’s Android software, which is rapidly gaining in popularity since being launched just over a year ago.

HTC Bravo has broken cover early thanks to a sneaky, albeit slightly blurry, spy shot. Expected to match the spec of the recently released Google Nexus One handset, HTC’s Bravo has one glaringly obvious trump card on Google’s offering, an optical trackpad instead of a trackball.

It is expected that the forthcoming HTC handset will utilise multi-touch functionality for Apple iPhone-esque pinch zooming.

Nexus One Enterprise edition might have physical keyboard

NexusOne physical Nexus One Enterprise edition might have physical keyboard

Google Inc executive Andy Rubin said on Friday that the next version of the Nexus One phone will be for enterprise users and might have a physical keyboard.
Such a device could potentially pose a competitive threat to BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, which has a strong position in the enterprise cellphone market.

Rubin, the brains behind Google’s Android operating system, made the comment during an interview with Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg at an event hosted by the newspaper.
Anyhow, release date, specs, pricing, and any other concrete existence is yet indefinite.

Google sued over 'Nexus One' name

eng nexus 60084 Google sued over 'Nexus One' name

The family of the late Philip K. Dick, the author of the book on which the film Blade Runner was based, say they are to sue Google for infringement of intellectual property rights.
The search giant’s new mobile phone, the Nexus One, has a similar name to a group of rogue androids from the film called “replicants” that are identified through the model designation Nexus-6. The phone’s operating system is called Android.
Isa Dick Hackett, Dick’s daughter, claims the names are lifted straight from her father’s science fiction novel “Do Android’s Dream of Electric Sheep?” Philip K. Dick’s daughter was said to be “shocked and dismayed” at Google’s naming of the phone without consultation.
“In my mind, there is a very obvious connection to my father’s novel,” said Isa Dick Hackett, president of the Dick estate outfit that handles licensing of his work, a few months back. “We were never consulted, no requests were made, and we didn’t grant any sort of permissions.”
No case was immediately filed however and Google successfully acquired a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in mid-December.
But on Wednesday this week, soon after the launch of the phone, Google was sent a letter demanding the company cease using the name. “Google takes first and then deals with the fallout later,” Hacket said. “In my mind, there is a very obvious connection to my father’s novel. People don’t get it. It’s the principle of it. It would be nice to have a dialogue. We are open to it. That’s a way to start.”
The family says the use of the name Nexus One is a trademark violation but Google claim the name has nothing to do with Dick’s work, and that it was simply using the word in its original sense – as a place where things converge.
